Shooting Safety Glasses

Shooting Safety Glasses

Shooters face all kinds of exposure. Possibilities of ricochets, flying bullet shells plus weather conditions like the blowing wind, the raging sun and flying dust, shooters are at risk for eye damage which is why the different safety glasses manufacturers came up with shooting safety glasses.

When choosing safety shooting glasses one important consideration is the lens. Lens made out of polycarbonate material is considered to be one of the best lenses for shooting safety glasses. Polycarbonate material is the same material used for bullet resistant glasses used in cars and windows. It is said to be a very hard material that you’ll need a special diamond grinding tool just the cut the lens. Lenses made out of polycarbonate are light, durable, impact and scratch resistant. Most of the standard issue shooting safety glasses is made out of polycarbonate material so it is strongly suggested that if you choose polycarbonate lenses when looking for shooting safety glasses. Of course the most important part you should also check is that the lenses passed the standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the military.

Choosing a lens with UV protection would be helpful too since the sun’s harmful rays may cause eye damage. Shooting safety glasses can absorb 99% of UV radiation and it should pass the ANSI UV requirements. Even clear polycarbonate lenses block and absorb UV rays so tints don’t exactly play much of a role in eye protection. Of course the lens should cover your eyes adequately. It should also cover the side areas of your eyes for a complete coverage.

Lenses would be dependent on personal preferences since they come in various colors that you can choose from. The most common ones would be smoke, gray and gray green tints. These colors effectively block glares and they don’t change color perceptions. Gray is a neutral color that is good for bright sunlight however they don’t enhance target visibility. Amber or brown tints improve contrast and depth perception making them a very good choice for shooting or hunting. Yellow or orange tints heighten visual acuity. They block blue light therefore enhancing the orange color of their targets. Yellow tints are usually better for night use. Purple tints in their lighter shade enhance the orange color of a target in a background of tall trees. However purple tints take some time to get used to.

With this said hopefully it can guide you in choosing the shooting safety glasses that would fit your preference.
